Practice notes
Practice notes are BandBinder's answer to the sticky notes and margin scribbles every band already makes in rehearsal - except they live on the chart, follow the lyric line they're about, and don't get lost between sessions.
Adding a note
Right-click (or long-press) any lyric line - or a section header, for a note about the section as a whole - and choose Add note. Press N to show or hide notes on the current chart.
Private vs. band-visible
Every note is one of two things, chosen when you write it and changeable any time by reopening it:
- Private (the default) - just for you. Nobody else in the band ever sees it, not even the band manager.
- Band-visible - the whole band sees it, on their own devices, attached to the same line.
A guest identity (joined by band code, no account) can only ever write private notes - the toggle to make one band-visible doesn't even show up, because a guest has no durable identity for the rest of the band to attribute it to.
Line anchoring
A note remembers the text of the line it's pinned to, not just its position, so editing the chart elsewhere never silently slides a note onto the wrong line. If that exact line is later removed or reworded, the note doesn't disappear - it drops into an "unanchored" group at the end of the chart, still yours to read, edit, or re-anchor to a different line from its own menu.
A repeated line (the same chorus twice) is tracked by which occurrence it is, so a note on the second chorus stays on the second chorus even if the first one changes.
What syncs, and what stays on the device
- In a local-only band (no account, or a band you've never synced), every note
- private or band-visible - stays on that one device. There's nothing to sync yet.
- In a synced band, band-visible notes sync to every member, same as the chart itself. Private notes sync too, but only to your own other signed-in devices - never to anyone else's. Nobody but the author, on any device, ever sees a private note.
This is the piece that makes practice notes worth keeping past one rehearsal: the reminder you wrote at Tuesday's practice is still pinned to the same line at the gig, on whichever device you brought.
